Hair Extensions have become as popular as turkey for Christmas dinner. You can hardly walk down the street without seeing a potential extension-ee and once you've had them yourself you can't stop staring at 'the girl with the beautiful long hair'...has she or hasn't she?

The bottom line is this.. hair extensions, when done properly and done WELL, look stunning. I've yet to see anyone with short hair that doesn't rapidly transform with their new long hair. Okay, cheesy it may sound but it's the truth. As soon as a girl has long, floating Princess hair they become a force to be reckoned with. Trust me, I've seen the timid little creature walk in and the Celebrity Diva walk out on more than one occasion.

Not only are they popular amongst the masses in general, they seem to be the MOST popular amongst the 'newly single'. The girls that have 'just finished with their boyfriends' who want to see them in the pub and knock them off their feet. It's a great feeling when you answer the phone to a newly formed, hysterical extensionee who is screaming that 'her ex nearly fell over when she swung her locks at him and sauntered off'. She then shows her gratitude by thanking you profusely and hanging up in a cloud of dreaminess! She can, she’s happy. Again, I fear this sounds cheesy but it's all true! It happens.

About a year ago, and having never worked in any beauty or hair related industry, I decided I needed something to support my yo-yo acting career (career?!). Having tried virtually everything else I thought I'd give extensions a go. I thought I’d hate it. I thought it wouldn’t be very ‘me’! I thought it was a job for the dippy girl that filed her nails during GCSE Maths! I thought it’d flexible, easy enough and it might just be perfect.

I thought the training would be a walk in the park. I sat and watched the training video thinking ‘This is soo easy’!

Then I tried it. My first attempt at applying a bond. If I said I struggled it’d be like saying England is quite cold. Suffice to say, my first head of extensions looked more like Frankenstein’s monster on a bad day than Victoria Beckham. So I worked and worked, practiced and practiced. No-one who entered my home left without a bond or two (or 50)! It’s fair to say that I underestimated the entire process and I found myself extremely humbled by my former arrogant disposition. I developed a new found respect for these girls that stand on their feet ‘fiddling’ with your head for hours on end. The ones that graft away while you read magazines and chat on your mobile. It took this to make me realise what a pompous snob I’d been previously.

So it’s one thing to learn it. Another to master it. Yet another to become accomplished at it. But the question that bugged me most of all…will I ever enjoy it?

Here I am, six months on and loving every single minute of it.

I love the feeling of changing someone’s mood. Or character. Not just their hair. You could say it's quite bizarre that us women have to do these things to feel better about ourselves. And sadly, I can't think of any wondrous pearls of wisdom to justify it. We just do. Alright? Despite being more emotional and more ‘in tune’ than our male counterparts, we can do materialistic too! What is it about long hair that makes us feel like an unstoppable force? That makes us feel like we have the edge when we go for an interview or to the gym? It's only hair after all.

Oh well, this 'only hair' is taking over our lives and our bank accounts. What next?
