Hair Extensions Became Her Passion
Geraldine
Carter, born and raised in France, comes from a hairdressing family. Her
experience began in her mothers shop in her home town in Nantes,
France, Centre du Chevue (translated into Hair Center).
Carters mother requested she go with her to a lecture
on hair extensions from Dick Guliker, president of Euro Hair Fashions
(EHF). What began as a request to help translate from French to English
started the ball rolling to get Carter into the hair extension business.
EHF is the manufacturer of Balmain hair
extensions. This weekend trip to Paris gave Carter the opportunity to
attend hands-on training in hair extensions where she attracted the attention
of Guliker, who asked her to go to the Netherlands to do some translations
needed for his presentation that following weekend at Coiffure Mondiale
de Paris, a prestigious hair awards show.
With Guliker impressed with Carters work as translator
and with hair extensions, Carter again extended her trip that started
out as a weekend to do some more training organization for 15 days in
Holland. That stay kept getting extended until she eventually stayed in
Holland for five years.
Carter
started in 1996 working on building new markets in France and Belgium
with her focus organizing training programs and presentation to build
excitement as well as developing sales strategies and quality control
issues. She eventually had three representatives working for her and was
focusing on managing international accounts.
Carter had met her husband Tom, who is American (she had
known since 1994) and when they got married in 2002 they moved permanently
to the USA. She had brought all her hair extension tools thinking shed
use them some day although at the time hair extensions were not popular
in the states. But she didnt have long to wait.
One
day EHF contacted her they were now in the United States market. Carter
was working at Nordstrom in Portland, Oregon at the time but thought this
was a great time for her to get back into the hair extension business
and open her own business. Her husband was cautious not quite believing
it was a viable option but Carter convinced him that hair extensions were
a new, growing market and would become huge in a few years time.
To illustrate her point, Carter opened her company and
became a vender at the West Coast Beauty Show. When she showed her husband
her success of selling 80 percent of her stock at the show plus being
the only distributor in the Northwest of Balmain hair extensions her husband
finally was convinced.
In 2004, Carter formed her own distributorship and called
it Tres Jolie. Today, Tres Jolie offers training programs and distributes
the entire line of Balmain hair extensions. In addition to the Balmain
hair extension line, Tres Jolie sells the KREMBS line of hair clips.
